A Visual Semiotic Analysis on Webtoon Ghost Teller

Abstract

Webtoon is one of the mediums in delivering thoughts, point of view and life values with others; one of them is the Ghost Teller webtoon. By using visual semiotics analysis, this research aimed to identify the sign found in the Ghost Teller webtoon and how it is interpreted. The Ghost Teller webtoon as the data of the research is collected by using qualitative research and visual materials from the application LINE Webtoon as the source of the data. They are twelve data analyzed by using visual semiotics with the theory proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce. This research use descriptive qualitative data analysis as the method of the study. Each data of this research consists of the sign and interpreting meaning. The signs identified based on Charles Sanders Peirce Triadic sign (Representamen, Object and Interpretant) and there are three steps in interpreting the sign namely, non-verbal communicative legisign, framing techniques and communicative act.

Webtoon adalah salah satu media dalam menyampaikan pendapat, sudut pandang dan nilai kehidupan kepada orang lain; salah satunya webtoon Ghost Teller. Dengan menggunakan analisis semiotika visual, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi elemen tanda yang terdapat dalam webtoon Ghost Teller dan bagaimana tanda itu diinterpretasikan. Ghost Teller sebagai data penelitian diambil dengan menggunakan material visual kualitatif dari LINE Webtoon sebagai sumber data. Dua belas data dianalisis menggunakan semiotik visual dengan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Charles Sanders Peirce. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis kualitatif sebagai metode penelitian. Setiap data penelitian ini terdiri dari tanda dan interpretasi arti. Tanda diidentifikasi berdasarkan triadic sign dari Charles Sanders Peirce (Representamen, Object dan Interpretant) dan ada tiga langkah dalam menginterpretasikan tanda tersebut, yaitu non-verbal communication legisign, framing techniques dan communicative act.
