    Improving Student’s Debate Ability Through Virtual Debate At Sma Muhammadiyah 9 Kualuh Hulu Grade Xi

    Abstract
    This thesis entitled "Improving Students Debate Ability through Virtual Debate at SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Kualuh Hulu" discussed speaking ability and debate ability. This thesis aims to identified the best way to improve speaking skills in English through debate media. The theory that supported this thesis is the theory put forward by Byrne, 1991. This thesis used a qualitative descriptive method. The data source in this thesis is the debate speeches from 8 debaters at SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Kualuh Hulu which is the Opening Government team (Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister), the Opening Opposition team (Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Opposition), Closing Government (Government Member and Government Whip) and Closing Opposition (Closing Government and Closing Whip) taken from the training debate for 8 meetings. The data in this study were the transcription of debate activity. The steps taken in this analysis were collecting data by transcribing debate speeches into text, identifying improvisation and fluency, and concluding the analysis. The results of this thesis showed that the improvisation and fluency of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Leader of the Opposition, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Government Member, Government Whip, Closing Government and Closing Whip are medium levels from the beginner level. In both improvisation and fluency levels, debate speeches show considerable improvisation and fluency. By having sufficiently high improvisation and fluency, debate speech can be categorized as written language.
     
    Tesis ini berjudul “Improving Students Debate Ability through Virtual Debate at SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Kualuh Hulu‟‟ membahas tentang speaking ability dan debate ability. Tesis ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi cara terbaik meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara dalam bahasa Inggris melalui media debat. Teori yang mendukung tesis ini adalah teori yang dikemukakan oleh Byrne, 1991. Tesis ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data dalam tesis ini adalah pidato debat dari 8 debater di SMA Muhammadiyah 9 Kualuh Hulu yang merupakan tim Opening Government team (Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister), the Opening Opposition team (Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Opposition), Closing Government (Government Member and Government Whip) and Closing Opposition (Closing Government and Closing Whip) yang diambil dari pelatihan depat selama 8 kali pertemuan. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah transkripsi aktivitas debat. Langkah yang dilewati dalam analisis ini adalah mengumpulkan data dengan menyalin pidato debat ke dalam teks, mengidentifikasi improvisasi dan fluency, serta menyimpulkan analisis. Hasil dari tesis ini menunjukkan bahwa improvisasi dan fluency dari para debaters adalah medium level dari beginner level. Baik dalam tingkat improvisasi dan fluency, pidato debat menunjukkan improvisasi dan fluency yang cukup tinggi. Dengan memiliki improvisasi dan fluency yang cukup tinggi, pidato debat dapat dikategorikan sebagai bahasa tertulis.
