Modification and characterization of cyclized natural rubber with maleic anhydride has been carried out to enhance its compatiblelity as substituent for synthetic paint binder. Cyclized natural rubber was modified by grafting of maleic anhydride in the melt phase in the internal mixer in the presence of comonomers styrene and benzoyl peroxide. Effect of rotor speed and reaction time were also studied by performing experiment with rotor speeds of 70, 80 and 90 rpm with reaction time: 6, 8 and 12 minutes, resfectively. The physical and chemical properties of grafted products were studied and characterized by Fourier Transformed-Infra Red (FT-IR), Thermographymetry Analysis (TGA) and Differential Scanning Chalorimetry (DSC). FT-IR spectra confirmed that the grafted product of maleic anhydride onto cyclized natural rubber accured by appearance band at 1732 cm-1, 1854 cm-1 and 706 cm-1. The higher concentration of maleic anhydride reacted the higher of grafting degree of maleic anhydride with the high intensity of absorption at 1732 cm-1 and 1854 cm-1. Styrene comonomer increased the grafting degree of maleic anhydride onto cyclized natural rubber up to 185%. Characterization by DSC was observed that the higher of grafting degree of maleic anhydride the higher the glass transition temperature. While the characterization by TGA observed that the thermal properties of grafted product were not significantly different from cyclized natural rubber standard. Compatibility of grafted products with synthetic binders polyamide increased with increasing the grafting degree of maleic anhydride.
