    Abstract
Background: Intestinal worm infection transmitted through soil (soil transmitted helminthiasis/STH) is still a world health problem particularly in tropical and sub-tropical regions including in Indonesia. Generally, STH can cause anemia, malnutrition and growth and intelligence faltering. Objective: To examine the relationship between the degree of STH worm infection suffered by primary school students and their intelligence level. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among a purposive sample of 150 students of SDN 067775 in Medan City from July until August 2012. Feces examination was conducted using Kato-Katz method, while intelligence level was measured using Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. The statistical analysis was done employing cross tabulation and Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Results: 62 students (41%) were positive for worm eggs in their feces. 63%, 37% and none of students experienced respectively light, moderate and serious infection. Most students (68%) had mental intelligence below the average. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov z test statistic of the relationship between the STH infection level and intelligence level is 3.413. Conclusion: The degree of STH worm infection suffered by the primary school students and their intelligence level associates significantly.
