    Abstract
Abstract Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) carries a poor prognosis because of its proximity to skull base and other vital structures. Nasopharyngeal carcinoma shows invasive and metastatic features and is more metastatic than other head and neck carcinoma. Objective: To determine MMP-9 expression in the nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Cancer cell invasion, metastasis, and angiogenesis is a complex, multistep process involving the cooperation of multiple proteolytic enzymes secreted by tumor or host cells and whose substrates include extracellular matrix components. Degradation of the extracellular matrix will lead the tumor cells invasion into surrounding tissue, vascular or lymphatic vessels.Which acts in the degradation process is matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). MMP-9 is a key step in tumor invasion, metastases and induction of vascularization of tumor tissue. Method: This study was descriptive by carrying out the immunohistochemical staining MMP-9 in 30 nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues that had never received radiotherapy, chemotherapy and/or combination. Result: Patients with nasopharynx carcinoma are most prevalent in age group 41-50 years and 51-60 years (30,0% respectively), men (73.3%) and non-ceratinizing squamous cell carcinoma (53,3%).Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the protein expression of MMP-9 detected in NPC tissues were no significant differences between the histologic type, primary tumor (T), lymph node metastasis (N) and stage of the NPC (p>0.05). Keywords : nasopharyngeal carcinoma, expression, matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9).
