A Semiotic Study of Hotman Paris Hutapea’s Body Language

Abstract

This thesis is entitled A SEMIOTIC STUDY OF HOTMAN PARIS HUTAPEA’S BODY LANGUAGE. It discusses types of body language shown by Hotman Paris Hutapea in terms of denotative and connotative meanings. The writer applies descriptive qualitative method in doing the research. The data of this study is sixteen selected picture and collecting by downloading the video entitled Mata Najwa: Rupa Rupa Pengacara on Metrotvnews Youtube and source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= FdMlXe_c5IY&t=2s. The writer applies the theory of Samovar and Porter (2013) to analyze the types of Hotman Paris Hutapea’s body language, and Barthes’ theory to analyze both denotative and connotative meanings of the body language. The results showed that the body language of appearance (skin color and attire), body movement (postures, gestures of hands, arms, and head), facial expression, eye contact, touch (friendship touch), and zone distances (intimate, personal, and social distances). His body language shows that he is an assertive and confident figure.

Skripsi ini berjudul A SEMIOTIC STUDY OF HOTMAN PARIS HUTAPEA’S BODY LANGUAGE. Skripsi ini membahas tentang tipe-tipe Bahasa tubuh dan makna denotatif dan konotatif. Penulis berfokus dalam mengidentifikasi tipe-tipe bahasa tubuh yang ditunjukkan oleh Hotman Paris Hutapea, beserta makna denotatif dan konotatifnya. Penulis menerapkan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data dari penelitian ini adalah enam belas gambar yang dipilih dan dikumpulkan dengan mengunduh sebuah video berjudul Mata Najwa: Rupa Rupa Pengacara di Metrotvnews Youtube dan sumber: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdMlXe_c5IY&t=2s. Penulis menerapkan teori Samovar and Porter untuk menganalisa tipe-tipe Bahasa tubuh Hotman Paris Hutapea, dan teori Barthes untuk menganalisa kedua makna denotatif dan konotatif dari bahasa tubuhnya. Hasilnya menunjukkan enam jenis bahasa tubuh, yakni penampilan (warna kulit dan pakaian), gerakan tubuh (postur, gerak tangan, lengan, dan kepala), ekspresi wajah, kontak mata, sentuhan (sentuhan pertemanan), dan jarak zona (intim, personal, dan zona sosial). Bahasa tubuhnya menunjukkan bahwa dia adalah sosok yang tegas dan dominan.
