The Struggle Against Racism Reflected in Langston Hughes Selected Poems

Abstract

The objective of this study is to find out the sense of struggling and the forms of racism toward their identitiy as Black Americans in Langston Hughes selected poems titled Advertisement For The Waldorf – Astoria , As I Grew Older , Children’s Rhyme , I , Too , Theme for English B , Negro Mother , Demand , Democracy , I Continue to Dream , The Negro Speaks River . In order to get the objective of the study the researcher uses the theory of racism with descriptive qualitative method by Miles and Huberman . Forms of racism are explained in the utterances includes personally –mediated ,internalized , and institutional racism . The meaning of struggling is to encourage the awareness of racial pride and to persuade that black people may also get the same equality and rights in all aspects of their lives . In analyzing the object of the study , there are four technqiues that are cooperated in finding and collecting data . They are reading , identifying , iventorying , and the last classifying the data .The result of this study is to identify the selected poems of Langston Hughes which can be categorized as the way of struggling from Black American in questing for their identity and also to find out the forms of racism in Lansgton Hughes’s selected poems

Skripsi ini memberikan deskripsi tentang bentuk –bentuk rasis dan perjuangan terkait identitas kulit hitam di Amerika dalam puisi pilihan karangan Langston Hughes yang berjudul : Advertisement For The Waldorf – Astoria , As I Grew Older , Children’s Rhyme , I , Too , Theme for English B , Negro Mother , Demand , Democracy , I Continue to Dream , The Negro Speaks River . Peneliti menggunakan teori rasisme dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif oleh Miles dan Huberman. Bentuk –bentuk rasis yang ditemukan dalam karya –karya Langston Hughes antara lain ; Personally Mediated –Racism ( Rasisme yang dimediasi secara pribadi ) , Internalized –Racism ( Rasisme terinternalisasi ) Institutional racism(Rasisme Institusional ) Adapun bentuk perjuangan dalam skripsi ini bertujuan untuk membangkitkan kecintaan terhadap ras dan untuk mengajak ras kulit hitam agar mendapatkan kesetaraan dan hak dalam segala aspek kehidupan . Dalam menganalisis objek kajian ini , peneliti menggunakan empat tehnik dalam pengumpulan data yaitu :membaca , mengidentifikasi , menemukan , dan mengklasifikasi data . Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perjuangan orang kulit hitam dalam mencari identitas mereka serta mengetahui bentuk –bentuk rasisme yang terdapat dalam puisi –puisi karangan Langston Hughes .
