    Wattpad Use and Reading Comprehension Skill: Students’ Attitude

    Abstract
    This research is entitled "Wattpad Use and Reading Comprehension Skill: Students' Attitude". The problem of this research is to find out what components of reading are affected by reading Wattpad and to find out students' attitudes towards using Wattpad for reading. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data for this study were collected from two sources, namely a questionnaire to 20 English Literature students at Universitas Sumatera Utara and interviews with 5 out of 20 selected respondents. The results of this study indicate two main things, namely: (1) Vocabulary is the component of reading that is most affected. As many as 40% of respondents chose vocabulary as the most affected reading component, 35% of respondents chose comprehension ability, 15% of respondents chose reading fluency and 10% of respondents chose phonemic awareness. (2) It was found that 10 respondents were judged to show a positive attitude towards the use of Wattpad, 6 respondents showed a neutral attitude and 4 respondents showed a negative attitude towards the use of Wattpad.
     
    Penelitian ini berjudul “Wattpad Use and Reading Comprehension Skill: Students’ Attitude”. Masalah dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan komponen membaca apa yang terpengaruh karena membaca Wattpad dan untuk mengetahui sikap mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan Wattpad untuk membaca. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari dua sumber yaitu kuisioner terhadap 20 orang mahasiswa Sastra Inggris Universitas Sumatra Utara dan interview terhadap 5 orang dari 20 responden yang dipilih. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan dua hal utama yaitu: (1) Kosakata adalah komponen membaca yang paling banyak terpengaruh. Sebanyak 40% dari responden memilih kosakata sebagai komponen membaca yang paling banyak terpengaruh, sebanyak 35% dari responden memilih kemampuan pemahaman, 15% dari responden memilih kelancaran membaca dan 10% dari responden memilih kesadaran fonemik. (2) Ditemukan terdapat 10 responden dinilai menunjukkan sikap positif terhadap penggunaan Wattpad, 6 responden menunjukkan sikap netral dan 4 responden menunjukkan sikap negative terhadap penggunaan Wattpad.
