    Abstract
Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection is an important public health problem in Indonesia. Factors influencing the incidence of STH are hygiene, sanitation, socio economic level, educational level, and ecosystem differences. The objective of this study is to know relationship between personal hygiene with STH infection in region where soil was contaminated with helminth eggs/larvae. A cross sectional study was done on 100 school age children in Bagan Kuala village (where sanitation is inadequate). Centrifuge floatation and Kato-Katz methods were used for soil and stool examinations, respectively. Personal hygiene data were collected by observation and interviewing children or parents of children using a questionnaire. Data analysis is performed using chi square test. The result shows soil contamination with helminth eggs is 73,2%, STH prevalence is 78%, the personal hygiene was associated with significant protection against STH infection where the habit of not washing hands with soap before meals is the most influential with PR 3,92 (95% CI: 1,64-9,35).
