Mayke Della Friska Ginting 107029007 The Effectiveness of Focus Group Discussion to Enhance Smoking Self Efficacy in Early Adulthood Categories of Medium Smoker Men ix + 128 pages, 17 tables Bibliography, 54 (1987-2013) Smoking has a negative impact for health and the environment, but quitting smoking is not an easy task (Sarafino, 2006). The concept of reciprocal determinism proposed by Bandura (1997) explained that Smoking Behavior has a reciprocal relationship with Person and Environment. Self efficacy within the Person is one important aspect, in which the degree of Smoking Self Efficacy (SSE) have a role with the ability to control smoking desire at high risk situation. This research uses a mixed method design in which utilize focus group discussion (FGD) as main technique to facilitate the enhancement of smoking self efficacy through vicarious learning, mastery experiences, verbal persuasion, and affective state. The respondents are 5 men age 20 – 22 with medium level of Smoking Behavior. Change on SSE was measured using Smoking Self Efficacy Questionnaire (SSEQ), along with observation and interviews. The results showed that FGD is effective to increase SSE and it tend to settled even after a month later. After intervention, respondents claimed that they are more confident in the ability to control their desire to smoke in almost all high risk situation, except when they are together with friends who do smoke and when drinking coffee. Furthermore, FGD facilitates vicarious learning the most, respondent became models for other respondents about controlling the desire to smoke. Therefore FGD is recommended to facilitate SSE enhancement in similar group of respondent. It also can be suggested to find out the effect on other groups based on gender, age, social situation, and different level of Smoking Behavior.en_US
