Peranan Gender dalam Arsitektur Studi Kasus : Arsitektur Karo

Abstract

The gender is hardly discuss in understanding Nusantara architecture. The appeare of post modern architecture due to the failure of modernism which supported by the feminism movement lead the gender become the focus of many dicipline include architecture. The gender in this tesis is focus on the role women and man alike in accordance with the development of architecture in Nusantara. Karo architecture either traditional or contemporary is put as case study in order to trace the change of the role of gender within certain period and place. The finding of research shows that the role of gander in space formation in architecture Nusantara is dominant and has not been changed radically within period of observation, except some transformation of women and man activity shape the space.

Pemahaman peranan gender hampir tidak pernah dilakukan didalam pembahasan arsitektur Nusantara. Dengan perkembangan arsitektur post modern yang muncul akibat gagalnya modernisme yang dipicu oleh gerakan feminisme, mengakibatkan perhatian terhadap peranan gender muncul ke permukaan. Peranan gender dalam kajian ini difokuskan kepada peranan laki-laki maupun perempuan didalam perkembangan arsitektur Nusantara, dengan mengambil kasus arsitektur tradisional Karo dan arsitektur Karo kontemporer, untuk melihat sejauh mana perubahan peranan gender dalam tempat dan kurun waktu tertentu. Dari kajian ini ditemukan bahwa peranan gender dalam arsitektur Nusantara cukup dominan dan tidak banyak berubah selama kurun pengamatan, kecuali beberapa peralihan fungsi dan peran dari masing-masing gender.
