Courage Portrayed in Serafina as a Main Character in Robert Beatty’s Novel Serafina and The Black Cloak

Abstract

This thesis entitled Courage Portrayed in Serafina as a Main Character in Robert Beatty’s Novel Serafina and the Black Cloak. This thesis focuses on courage types and the factors behind courageous actions done by Serafina as a main character in Robert Beatty’s novel Serafina and the Black Cloak, what actions consider as courageous actions, what factors affect the courageous actions. This study uses descriptive qualitative method as the research method because the data are not numerical data. The writer collects data from the novel in form of narrations and dialogues that are found in the novel. The aims of this thesis are to find out what types of courage done by Serafina and what factors affect Serafina to be courageous in the novel. The writer uses Dungate’s theory to classify the courage into six types (physical courage, social courage, intellectual courage, moral courage, emotional courage, and spiritual courage) and a study which is conducted by Rate, Clarke, Lindsay, and Sternberg to classify the factors of the courageous actions (external circumstances, affective, and motivational).

Skripsi ini berjudul Courage Portrayed in Serafina as a Main Character in Robert Beatty’s Novel Serafina and the Black Cloak. Skripsi ini berfokus pada jenis-jenis keberanian dan faktor-faktor yang melatarbelakangi tindakan berani yang dilakukan oleh Serafina sebagai tokoh utama dalam novel Robert Beatty, Serafina and the Black Cloak, tindakan apa yang dianggap sebagai tindakan berani, faktor-faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi tindakan berani tersebut. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif sebagai metode penelitian karena datanya bukan merupakan data numerik. Penulis mengumpulkan data dari novel dalam bentuk narasi dan dialog yang ditemukan dalam novel. Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis keberanian apa yang dilakukan oleh Serafina dan faktor-faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi Serafina untuk menjadi berani dalam novel tersebut. Penulis menggunakan teori Dungate untuk mengklasifikasikan keberanian menjadi enam jenis (keberanian fisik, keberanian sosial, keberanian intelektual, keberanian moral, keberanian emosional, dan keberanian spiritual) dan penelitian yang dilakukan oleh Rate, Clarke, Lindsay, dan Sternberg untuk mengklasifikasikan factor-factor tindakan keberanian (keadaan eksternal, afektif, dan motivasi).
