Self-Actualization Portrayed in Paulo Coelho’s Eleven Minutes and Milena Busquets’s This Too Shall Pass: A Comparative Literature Analysis

Abstract

This thesis contains a study of comparative literature which involves two literary works from two different nations with similar motifs, which is Self-Actualization. This study is aiming to find out about Self-Actualization portrayed in the two literary works, to find out how are the process of achieving Self-Actualization, what are the problems of achieving Self-Actualization, and to find out the similarities and differences to achieve Self-Actualization that the main characters are experiencing by using the theory of Hierarchy of Needs by Abraham Maslow. Both main characters of the two literary works, Maria and Blanca are going through the process of Self-Actualization. This study also includes the analysis of the intrinsic elements to determine the similarities and differences between the two literary works. The writer completes the analysis using the descriptive qualitative method, which represents all of the data in the form of words and sentences. The writer collects data from various sources including Eleven Minutes by Paulo Coelho, This Too Shall Pass by Milena Busquets, relevant books, articles, and journals to support the analysis. Based on the results of the analysis, the two literary works show similarities and differences relating to Self-Actualization that is experienced by the two main characters of both literary works. Both main characters fulfilled four lower-level needs in the Hierarchy of Needs which are: Physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, and esteem needs before finally achieving Self-Actualization. There are also three barriers that occur during the process of achieving Self-Actualization. The three barriers are ignorance, an unsupportive environment, and the overabundance of security concerns.

Skripsi ini berisi tentang studi sastra bandingan antara dua karya sastra dari negara yang berbeda dengan motif yang sama, yaitu Aktualisasi Diri. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui motif Aktualisasi Diri dalam dua karya sastra tersebut, untuk mengetahui bagaimana proses pencapaian Aktualisasi Diri, apa masalah pencapaian Aktualisasi diri, dan menemukan persamaan dan perbedaan terkait dengan pencapaian Aktualisasi Diri yang dialami oleh karakter utama dengan menggunakan teori Hierarki Kebutuhan oleh Abraham Maslow. Karakter utama dari masing-masing karya sastra, Maria dan Blanca sama-sama melalui proses Aktualisasi Diri. Penelitian ini juga melibatkan analisis unsur intrinsik untuk menentukan persamaan dan perbedaan antara kedua karya sastra tersebut. Penulis menyelesaikan analisis ini menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif, yang merepresentasikan seluruh data dalam bentuk kata dan kalimat. Penulis mengumpulkan data dari berbagai sumber termasuk novel Eleven Minutes dari Paulo Coelho, This Too Shall Pass dari Milena Busquets, buku, artikel, dan jurnal untuk mendukung analisis. Berdasarkan hasil dari analisis, kedua karya sastra tersebut menunjukkan persamaan dan perbedaan yang berkaitan dengan Aktualisasi Diri yang dialami oleh kedua karakter utama dalam kedua karya sastra tersebut. Kedua karakter utama memenuhi empat kebutuhan tingkat yang lebih rendah dalam Hierarki Kebutuhan yaitu: Kebutuhan fisiologis, kebutuhan keamanan, kebutuhan cinta dan keberadaan, dan kebutuhan penghargaan sebelum akhirnya mencapai Aktualisasi Diri. Ada juga tiga hambatan yang terjadi selama proses pencapaian Aktualisasi Diri. Tiga hambatan tersebut adalah ketidaktahuan, lingkungan yang tidak mendukung, dan kekhawatiran keamanan yang berlebihan.
