Attitudes Portrayed in Ilaya Baxter’s Novel The Chameleons Among Us: An Appraisal Analysis

Abstract

This thesis is entitled "Attitude Portrayed in Ilaya Baxter's novel The Chameleons Among Us: An Appraisal Analysis". This thesis is about the types of Attitude found in the novel by Ilaya Baxter which is based on the contents of the novel that occurred. This study aims to determine the types of Attitude and their realization. This study applies the Appraisal theory initiated by Martin and White (2005) regarding the type of attitude contained in the text, the strength of the feelings involved and ways of assessing that are sourced and aligned with the reader. Data were collected from 3 chapters of the novel purposively. The methodology of this research applied is descriptive qualitative method. This research applied a qualitative data analysis introduced by Miles & Hubberman (2014). The results of the study show that (1) dominantly there are (101) Positive Affect contained in the novel The Chameleons Among Us while there are (46) Negative Affect; then it is followed by (75) Positive Judgment and (41) Negative Judgment; and lastly, there are (50) Positive Appreciation and (16) Negative Appreciation of 419 Sentences and 329 item ratings. (2)Based on the results above, it can be concluded that the realization of Attitude can be shown by the emotions and feelings conveyed by each character in the novel to invite readers to understand the contents of The Chameleons Among Us novel.

Skripsi ini berjudul “Attitude Portrayed in Ilaya Baxter’s novel The Chameleons Among Us: An Appraisal Analysis”. Skripsi ini mengenai jenis-jenis Attitude yang ditemukan pada novel karya Ilaya Baxter yang berdasarkan isi novel yang terjadi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis dari Attitude dan realisasinya. Penelitian ini menerapkan teori Appraisal yang dicetuskan oleh Martin dan White (2005) yang mengenai jenis Attitude yang terdapat dalam teks, kekuatan perasaan yang terlibat serta cara-cara menilai yang bersumber dan selaras pada pembaca. Data dikumpulkan dari 3 chapter of the novel secara purposif. Metodologi penelitian yang diterapkan yaitu metode deskriptif kualitatif. Penelitian ini merupak teori Miles&Hubberman pada penelitian data kualitatif (2014). Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) secara dominan ada (101) Positive Affect yang terdapat pada novel The Chameleons Among Us sedangkan itu ada (46) Negative Affect; kemudian hal itu diikuti oleh (75) Positive Judgment dan (41) Negative Judgment; dan yang terakhir, ada (50) Positive Appreciation dan (16) Negative Appreciation dari 419 Kalimat dan 329 penilaian item. (2) berdasarkan dari hasil yang diatas, hal ini dapat diputuskan bahwa realisasi Attitude tidak dapat ditunjukan dengan emosi dan perasaan yang disampaikan oleh tiap karakter dalam novel untuk mengajak pembaca mengerti tentang isi novel The Chameleons Among Us.
