Futurism Applied in the Novel P.W Singer and August Cole’s Ghost Fleet and George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Comparative Literature

Abstract

This thesis is entitled Futurism Applied in P.W Singer and August Cole’s Ghost Fleet and George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four: A Comparative Literature. The thesis contains a study of comparative literature which involves two literary works from two different nations but has the similar motif, which is Futurism. The aim of this thesis is to find what aspects of futurism are applied in the two literary works, to find out how the differences and similarities of futurism according to F.T Marinetti’s aspect of futurism. This study also looks at the intrinsic characteristics of two literary works to compare and contrast the similarities and differences. The writer employs the descriptive qualitative method to complete the analysis, which represents all of the facts in words and sentences. To support the analysis, the writer gathers data from a variety of sources, including the novels Ghost Fleet by P.W Singer and August Cole and the second one, Nineteen Eighty-four by George Orwell, as well as relevant books, articles and journals. Based on the findings of the study, it can be be concluded that the two literary works show differences and similarities regarding the depiction of the future. In the first literary work there are 6 of 7 aspects of futurism, while in the second novel there are 5 of 7 aspects. The seven aspects of futurism are intuition, analogy, irony, metrical reform, abolition of syntax, onomatopoeia, and essential or synthetic lyricism.

Skripsi ini berjudul Futurism Applied in P.W Singer and August Cole’s Ghost Fleet and George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four: A Comparative Literature. skripsi ini berisi tentang analisis sastra bandingan menggunakan 2 karya sastra dari 2 negara yang berbeda dengan motif yang sama yaitu Futurism atau masa depan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui aspek-aspek masa depan yang diaplikasikan didalam dua karya sastra tersebut, juga penggambaran perbedaan dan persamaan masa depan menggunakan teori F.T Marinetti’s aspects of futurism. Studi ini juga menggunakan unsur intrinsik untuk melihat adanya persamaan dan perbedaan yang ditemukan dari kedua novel tersebut. Dalam menyelesaikan analisis ini, penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, karena data-data yang disampaikan tersebut dalam bentuk kata dan kalimat. Penulis mengumpulkan data dari berbagai sumber termasuk novel Ghost Fleet oleh P.W Singer dan August Cole dan novel kedua Nineteen Eighty-four dari George Orwell, artikel, buku, dan jurnal yang berkaitan dengan analisi sebagai pendukung. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa kedua karya sastra menunjukkan perbedaan dan persamaan mengenai penggambaran masa depan. Didalam karya sastra pertama terdapat 6 dari 7 aspek futurisme, sedangkan didalam novel kedua terdapat 5 dari 7 aspek. Adapun 7 aspek tersebut yaitu intuisi, analogi, ironi, metrical reform, abolisi sintaks, onomatopoeia, dan essensial atau lirik sintetik.
