    The Use of Appraisal Attitude in The Coronavirus (Covid-19) Texts of CNN International Website

    Abstract
    This research discusses the Appraisal theory, especially the Attitude device in the Coronavirus (COVID-19) texts of CNN International Website. It is meant to explore what happened to the attitude of the authors of the news articles on the CNN website. This research uses Martin and White's evaluation theory (2005). The data was purposefully collected from five news articles on the CNN website. This research adopts descriptive and qualitative methods. This study applied the qualitative data analysis introduced by Miles and Huberman (2014). The research results found that (1) 51 (29,7%) positive affect mainly appear in news articles on CNN website, with 44 (25,6%) negative Affect; followed by 46 (26,7%) positive Judgments and 15 (8,7%) negative Judgments; finally, 15 (8.7%) positive Appreciation, with 1 (0,6) Negative Appreciation that come from five articles. (2) Based on the results above, it can be considered that the realization of the attitude establishes the credibility of readers, especially for readers from all over the world to find real information and references. The results show that the Appraisal Attitude used in the data are Affect, Judgment, and Appreciation. The evaluation attitude used by the CNN news article website is mainly Affect, while Judgement and Appreciation are the least common.
     
    Penelitian ini membahas tentang teori Appraisal khususnya perangkat Attitude dalam teks-teks Coronavirus (COVID-19) dari CNN International Website. Hal ini dimaksudkan untuk mengeksplorasi apa yang terjadi pada sikap penulis artikel berita di situs CNN. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori evaluasi Martin and White (2005). Data tersebut sengaja dikumpulkan dari lima artikel berita di situs CNN. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif dan kualitatif. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis data kualitatif yang diperkenalkan oleh Miles dan Huberman (2014). Hasil penelitian menemukan bahwa (1) 51 (29,7%) pengaruh positif terutama muncul pada artikel berita di website CNN, dengan 44 (25,6%) pengaruh negatif; diikuti oleh 46 (26,7%) Putusan positif dan 15 (8,7%) Putusan negatif; akhirnya 15 (8,7%) Apresiasi positif, dengan 1 (0,6) Apresiasi Negatif yang berasal dari lima artikel. (2) Berdasarkan hasil di atas, dapat dianggap bahwa perwujudan sikap membangun kredibilitas pembaca, terutama bagi pembaca dari seluruh dunia untuk mencari informasi dan referensi nyata. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Appraisal Attitude yang digunakan dalam data adalah Affect, Judgment, dan Appreciation. Sikap evaluasi yang digunakan oleh situs artikel berita CNN sebagian besar adalah Mempengaruhi, sedangkan Penghakiman dan Apresiasi adalah yang paling tidak umum.
