Errors In Pronouncing English Vowels Made By Mandailing Students: A Praat Based Study

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the error and settle the problems of pronunciation error of Mandailing students in pronouncing English words, to find out where their mistakes are, and find out how to improve the pronunciation. The qualitative method is chosen by the researcher to be applied in this research since the data of this research is non-numeric. In a qualitative method, the research is more focused on process and meaning. The researcher selected four students who had studied phonology from English literature at the Universitas Sumatera Utara. The researcher took English Native Speaker pronunciation data from Google as the standard value for pronunciation and records the participant's pronunciation of words containing focused phonemes. A computer software called Praat was used as an instrument to analyze sound. The data were analyzed using acoustic phonetics and Larry Selinker‟s theory of interlanguage. It can be seen from the results of the questionnaire where participants are not too focused on accuracy in pronunciation of English words. they don't try to find out by listening to native speakers or other ways to find out the correct pronunciation of an English word. it was found that English vowel pronounced incorrectly are / ɪ / /e / / æ / /ɒ/ /ʊ/ / ʌ / and / ə/ / i:/ /u:/ /ɔ:/ /α:/ and /З:/. First, after using the Praat software as a research tool, it was found that none of the participants could pronounce phonemes with an average score of 100% like native speakers. Second, the researcher included a questionnaire to find out the causes of errors in the pronunciation of English words, and based on The Theory of Interlanguage it was found that the cause of errors made by the participants was Learners Make Their Own Rules of Language where most of them answered that they did not pay attention or focus to figure out how to pronounce English words well.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui kesalahan dan menyelesaikan masalah kesalahan pengucapan siswa Mandailing dalam mengucapkan kata-kata bahasa Inggris, untuk mengetahui di mana kesalahan mereka, dan mencari cara untuk meningkatkan pengucapan. Metode kualitatif dipilih oleh peneliti untuk diterapkan dalam penelitian ini karena data penelitian ini bersifat non-numerik. Dalam metode kualitatif, penelitian lebih menitikberatkan pada proses dan makna. Peneliti memilih empat mahasiswa yang pernah belajar fonologi dari sastra Inggris di Universitas Sumatera Utara. Peneliti mengambil data pengucapan English Native Speaker dari Google sebagai nilai standar untuk pengucapan dan mencatat pengucapan kata-kata peserta yang mengandung fonem terfokus satu per satu. Sebuah perangkat lunak komputer yang disebut Praat digunakan sebagai instrumen untuk menganalisis suara. Data dianalisis menggunakan fonetik akustik dan teori antarbahasa Larry Selinker. Data menunjukkan bahwa penyebab kesalahan yang sering terjadi adalah karena Over-Generalization terutama pada bagian Pembelajar Membuat Aturan Bahasa Sendiri, hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil kuesioner dimana peserta tidak terlalu fokus pada ketepatan pengucapan kata-kata bahasa Inggris. mereka tidak mencoba mencari tahu dengan mendengarkan penutur asli atau cara lain untuk mengetahui pengucapan yang benar dari sebuah kata bahasa Inggris. ditemukan bahwa vokal bahasa Inggris yang diucapkan salah adalah / ɪ / /e / / æ / /ɒ/ /ʊ/ / ʌ / dan / ə/ / i:/ /u:/ /ɔ:/ /α:/. Pertama, setelah menggunakan software Praat sebagai alat penelitian, ternyata tidak ada satu pun peserta yang bisa mengucapkan fonem dengan skor rata-rata 100% seperti penutur asli. Kedua, peneliti memasukkan kuesioner untuk mengetahui penyebab kesalahan dalam pengucapan kata-kata bahasa Inggris, dan berdasarkan The Theory of Interlanguage ditemukan bahwa penyebab kesalahan yang dilakukan oleh peserta adalah Pembelajar Membuat Aturan Bahasa Sendiri di mana sebagian besar dari mereka menjawab bahwa mereka tidak memperhatikan atau fokus untuk mencari tahu bagaimana mengucapkan kata-kata bahasa Inggris dengan baik.
