    Abstract
Depression is a psychological disorder that is often found in patients with chronic diseases, including patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In Indonesia, the prevalence of depression in hemodialysis patients reaches 31.1%. In recent years, many studies trying to identify the effect of electrolyte components on depression in hemodialysis patients, one of which is magnesium. Screening for depression in hemodialysis patients, Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) can be examined, which consists of 21 questions where the higher the BDI II score, the more severe the symptoms of depression. Method: This cross-sectional study analyzed regular hemodialysis patients at Haji Adam Malik Hospital, Medan, Indonesia, from June 2020 to August 2020 and was approved by the Research Ethics Commission of the USU Faculty of Medicine. Questionnaire using the BDI II was performed to assess the degree of depressive symptoms. Magnesium levels were examined by spectrophotometric. Data was analyzed using the Spearman Correlation test where p <0.05 was considered significant. Result: Among the 48 regular hemodialysis patients included in this study, 46 (95.8%) patients had no depressive symptoms, followed by 2(4.2%) patients with mild depressive symptoms and no moderate or severe depressive symptoms were found. Hypomagnesemia in 1 (2.1%) patients, normomagnesemia 3 (6.3%), and hypermagnesemia in 44 (91.7%) patients. There is a significant correlation between magnesium levels and BDI II score (p <0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between serum Magnesium levels
