    Stylistic Level of Covid-19 News Headlines in The Jakarta Post and The Sydney Morning Herald Newspaper

    Abstract
    This paper is concerned with the stylistics of selected online newspaper headlines reportage on the theme of COVID-19. The online newspapers headlines which are going to be analyzed are The Jakarta Post and The Sydney Morning Herald. The study applies the levels of linguistic-stylistics which is introduced by Simpson to examine the stylistic differences and similarities. The data for this study are words, phrases, clauses and sentences in the headlines on the theme of COVID-19 of the Jakarta Post and the Sydney Morning Herald, starting from April 7, 2021- July 7, 2021. The sources of the data taken from the jakartapost.com and smh.com.au. The data were analyzed using Miles, Huberman, and Saldana Interactive Analysis Method. The conclusion of this research stated that there were two types of stylistic levels; Semantics and Pragmatics. The differences between two newspapers were Semantics is the most dominant types the Sydney Morning Herald Newspaper, while it is the lowest dominant types in the Jakarta Post Newspaper. The similarities between the Jakarta Post and the Sydney Morning Herald Newspapers were the way they present the non-grammar way and used figurative meaning. The researcher suggested that a deep analysis of other aspect of theory is needed to analyze the data, and further research can combine with genre study, especially news headline genre.
     
    Tulisan ini membahas tentang stilistika reportase kabar utama surat kabar daring bertema COVID-19. Surat kabar daring yang dianalisis adalah The Jakarta Post dan The Sydney Morning Herald. Kajian ini menggunakan tataran stilistika linguistik yang diperkenalkan oleh Simpson untuk mengkaji perbedaan dan persamaan stilistika. Data penelitian ini berupa kata, frasa, klausa, dan kalimat pada kabar utama dengan tema COVID-19 di Jakarta Post dan Sydney Morning Herald mulai tanggal 7 April 2021 – 7 Juli 2021. Sumber data diambil dari jakartapost.com dan smh.com.au. Analisis data menggunakan Metode Analisis Interaktif Miles, Huberman, dan Saldana. Kesimpulan penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa ada dua jenis tingkatan stilistika; Semantik dan Pragmatik. Perbedaan antara kedua surat kabar tersebut adalah Semantik adalah jenis yang paling dominan di Surat Kabar Sydney Morning Herald, sedangkan Semantik menjadi jenis dominan terendah di Surat Kabar Jakarta Post. Kesamaan antara The Jakarta Post dan Sydney Morning Herald Newspapers adalah cara mereka menyajikan kabar utama, yaitu; non-tata bahasa dan menggunakan makna kiasan. Peneliti menyarankan agar analisis mendalam terhadap aspek lain dari teori diperlukan untuk menganalisis data, dan penelitian lebih lanjut dapat menggabungkan dengan studi genre, terutama genre kolom berita.
