Ebook Usage and Students’ Perspective in Reading Comprehension Skill

Abstract

This paper examined students’ attitude towards e-book in reading skills, the problem research is to find out the English department of University of Sumatera Utara students’ perspective or the attitude toward E-book in reading. This research use descriptive qualitative method and Questionnaire as the data collection method. The data of the study, were collected from 20 participant from English department students of University of North Sumatra. The finding of the study showed that from overall participant, 45% or 9 students’ had a positive perception or attitudes toward E-book in reading, 30% or 6 participants had negative perception and 25% or 5 students had neutral perception or attitude toward e-book in reading. The second finding for the reading component that mostly affected, from 20 students, half of the participant or 10 of them choose Vocabulary as the mostly affected skills in reading e-book, Fluency become the second highest with total 5 respondents, comprehension is on the third with 4 respondents, and the last is phonemic awareness with only 1 respondents.

Makalah ini mengkaji tentang sikap mahasiswa terhadap e-book dalam keterampilan membaca, masalah dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perspektif atau sikap mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Sumatera Utara terhadap E-book dalam membaca. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dan Kuesioner sebagai metode pengumpulan data. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan dari 20 peserta dari mahasiswa jurusan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Sumatera Utara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari keseluruhan peserta, 45% atau 9 siswa memiliki persepsi atau sikap positif terhadap Ebook dalam membaca, 30% atau 6 peserta memiliki persepsi negatif dan 25% atau 5 siswa memiliki persepsi atau sikap netral terhadap e-book dalam membaca. Temuan kedua untuk komponen membaca yang paling terpengaruh, dari 20 siswa, setengah dari peserta atau 10 dari mereka memilih Kosakata sebagai keterampilan yang paling terpengaruh dalam membaca e-book, Kefasihan menjadi yang tertinggi kedua dengan total 5 responden, pemahaman ada pada posisi ketiga dengan 4 responden, dan yang terakhir adalah kesadaran fonemik dengan hanya 1 responden.
