An Analysis of Climate Apocalypse in Jenny Offill’s Novel Weather: An Ecocriticism Approach

Abstract

The title of this thesis is AN ANALYSIS OF CLIMATE APOCALYPSE IN JENNY OFFILL‟S NOVEL WEATHER: AN ECOCRITICISM APPROACH. This novel is written by Jenny Offill on 2020, which the story goes with a librarian turned to environmental activist after realizing the world is nearly end. As seen from the title of this thesis focuses on climate apocalypse portrayed in the novel Weather; the obstacles and the struggles that the main character experienced to overcome the climate apocalypse. The purpose of this research is to describe climate apocalypse portrayed in Weather; the obstacles that the main character experienced, as well as the struggles, to overcome the climate apocalypse. This research uses a library-based and qualitative method. Then, an ecocriticism approach on the scope of Apocalypse by Greg Garrard reveals climate apocalypse that is portrayed in the novel through the main character‟s obstacles and struggles.

Skripsi ini berjudul ANALISIS KIMAT IKLIM PADA NOVEL CUACA JENNY OFFILL: AN PENDEKATAN ECOCRITICISM. Novel ini ditulis oleh Jenny Offil pada tahun 2020, yang ceritanya seorang pustakawan beralih ke aktivis lingkungan setelah menyadari dunia hampir kiamat. Dilihat dari judul skripsi ini fokus pada kiamat iklim yang tergambar dalam novel Weather; hambatan dan perjuangan yang dialami tokoh utama untuk mengatasi kiamat iklim. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan kiamat iklim yang digambarkan dalam Weather; hambatan yang dialami tokoh utama, serta perjuangan, untuk mengatasi kiamat iklim. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode library-based dan kualitatif. Kemudian, pendekatan ekokritik pada ruang lingkup Apocalypse oleh Greg Garrard mengungkapkan kiamat iklim yang digambarkan dalam novel melalui rintangan dan perjuangan karakter utama.
