The Use of Satire in the Daily Show with Trevor Noah: A Stylistics Study

Abstract

Satire is a part of language style, a figure of speech used to mock, criticize, or ridicule. Satire is implicitly humorous, it has a moral purpose as the satirist implied concept of true correct behavior. This thesis analyzes the use of satire in The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. The objectives of this study are to classify the types of satire, to reveal the technique of expressing satire, and to analyze the satirical message in satirical news by Trevor Noah. The data in this study was taken from The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Descriptive qualitative method is applied to analyze the data. Thus, in doing this study, library research is applied in analyzing the data. It takes six episodes of The Daily Show with Trevor Noah that downloaded in the internet. The data focused on the utterances of the host in The Daily Show with Trevor Noah that consist of Satire. Based on the analysis, there are three types of Satire that occurred in the show namely horatian satire, juvenalian satire and menippean satire proposed by Abrams theory. From the data obtained, there are fifty (50) utterances found in the Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Three types of Satire are found, there were 23 utterances of horatian satire, 10 utterances of juvenalian satire and 17 utterances of menippean satire. Furthermore, satire employs a variety of forms of humor to make its intended point. The satirical techniques used by Trevor Noah to mask the message that lies beyond the humorous are vividness, irony, topicality, parody, paradox, anticlimax, and exaggeration. The message that is conveyed in Trevor’s utterance was criticism of one’s ignorant behavior as well as according to what they have said and did. Thus, Trevor Noah was using the satirical weapon to criticize and satirize for the cluster of ideas and people‘s behavior that occurred in the Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

Satire adalah bagian dari gaya bahasa, majas yang digunakan untuk mengejek, mengkritik, atau mencemooh. Satire secara implisit lucu, memiliki tujuan moral sebagai konsep satiris tersirat tentang perilaku yang benar benar. Skripsi ini menganalisis penggunaan satire dalam The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengklasifikasikan jenis-jenis satir, mengungkap teknik pengungkapan satire, dan menganalisis pesan satir dalam berita satir karya Trevor Noah. Data dalam penelitian ini diambil dari The Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Metode deskriptif kualitatif diterapkan untuk menganalisis data. Oleh karena itu, dalam melakukan penelitian ini, penelitian kepustakaan diterapkan dalam menganalisis data. Dibutuhkan enam episode The Daily Show with Trevor Noah yang diunduh di internet. Data difokuskan pada tuturan pembawa acara dalam The Daily Show with Trevor Noah yang berisi Satire. Berdasarkan analisis, ada tiga jenis Satire yang muncul dalam pertunjukan yaitu satire horatian, satire juvenalian dan satire menippean yang dikemukakan oleh teori Abrams. Dari data yang diperoleh, ada lima puluh (50) ujaran yang ditemukan dalam Daily Show with Trevor Noah. Tiga jenis satire yang ditemukan, yaitu satire horatian 23 ujaran, satire juvenali 10 ujaran dan satire menippean 17 tuturan. Selain itu, satire menggunakan berbagai bentuk humor untuk menyampaikan maksud tujuannya. Teknik satir yang digunakan oleh Trevor Noah untuk menutupi pesan yang terletak di luar humor adalah kejelasan, ironi, aktualitas, parodi, paradoks, antiklimaks, dan berlebihan. Pesan yang tersampaikan dalam tuturan Trevor adalah kritik terhadap perilaku jahil seseorang serta sesuai dengan apa yang telah mereka katakan dan lakukan. Oleh karena itu, Trevor Noah menggunakan senjata satir untuk mengkritik dan menyindir kumpulan ide dan perilaku masyarakat yang terjadi di Daily Show with Trevor Noah.
