    Code – Mixing and Code -Switching in Teaching and Learning Process: A Case Study at Sultan Iskandar Muda School in Medan

    Abstract
    The objectives of this study were to find out the types , how the English teachers used code switching and code mixing in teaching learning process, to reveal the reasons why did the teachers switched and mixed the utterences in the teaching learning process . This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method . The objects of this study were three of English teachers grade X .XI ,XII at SMA SULTAN ISKANDAR MUDA SCHOOL MEDAN. The data were collected by video recording of the teachers’ utterances during the teaching learning process to find out the types and how the English teachers used code switching and code mixing in teaching learning process, interviewing the teachers to reveal the reasons why did the teachers switched and mixed the codes. The findings of the study showed that the most frequent types of code switching done by the teachers in the online learning process were inter sentential code switching. The total is 51 types with percentage 50.49% . The most frequent types of code mixing done by the teachers were the insertion (word). The total is 71 types with percentage 70.29 %. The conclusion is English teachers conducted Code Mixing and Code Switching by : word inserted , phrase inserted , repetition of words inserted, clause inserted and Sentence inserted . The most frequent reasons of why did the teachers switched and mixed the codes in utterances was Clarifying the speech content. The total is 8 with percentage 29.62%.
     
    Tujuan dari peneitian ini adalah untuk menemukan jenis-jenis dan bagaimana Guru Bahasa Inggris menggunakan peralihan dan pencampuran kode oleh guru pada saat proses belajar mengajar di kelas, serta untuk mengungkapkan alasan-alasan dari guru mengapa mereka melakukan peralihan dan pencampuran kode dalam proses mengajar di kelas . Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Objek penelitian dalam penelitian ini adalah tiga orang guru Bahasa Inggris yang masing-masing guru dikelas X, XI , XIIdi SMA SULTAN ISKANDAR MUDA . Teknik pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini yaitu melalui rekaman video dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar di kelas. Teknik berikutnya adalah wawacara untuk mengungkapkan alasan-alasan mengapa guru tersebut melakukan peralihan dan pencampuran kode pada saat proses belajar mengajar di kelas. Hasil dari penelitian ini telah ditemukan bahwa jenis peralihan kode yang paling banyak terjadi adalah inter sentential dengan jumlah 51 jenis atau 50,49%. Guru Baahasa Inggris meggunakan peralihan dan pencampuran kode oleh guru pada saat proses belajar mengajar di kelas dengan cara : word inserted , phrase inserted , repetition of words inserted, clause inserted dan Sentence inserted. Jenis pencampuran kode yang paling sering terjadi adalah insertion word dengan total 71 jenis atau 70.29%. alasan yang paling banyak diungkapkan guru mengapa mereka melakukan peralihan dan pertukaran kode pada saat mengajar adalah Clarifying the speech content dengan total 8 atau 29.62%.
