    Abstract
Background Sepsis remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality among critically ill children in pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Procalcitonin and lactate are sepsis biomarkers that correlate with disease severity, organ failure, and death. PELOD score is a tool used to know the severity of organ dysfunction in critically ill children. Objective To investigate relationship between procalcitonin and lactate levels with PELOD score in septic patients. Methods A cross sectional study was conducted in children with sepsis who were admitted to PICU during April until July 2012. Sepsis is Systemic lnflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) in the presence of or as a result of suspected or proven infection. Proven infection is the finding of positive cultures (blood, urin or other specimens) and or procalcitonin > 2. Spearman test was used to assess fie correlation between procalcitonin and lactate levels with PELOD score. Multiple linier regression was used to assess relationship between procalcitonin and lactate levels simultaneously with PELOD score. Data was analyzed by computer programme with confidence interval 95% and P<0.05 is defined significant. Results Total of 32 patient were analyzed, consisted of 18 (56.3%) males and 14 (43.8%) females with range of age 1-432 months ( median 21 months). There was no correlation between procalcitonin level and PELOD score (P=0.08 r=-0.86) as well as lactate level and PELOD score (P=0.709 r= 0.69). Simultaneously, there was no relationship between procalcitonin and lactate levels with PELOD score with adjusted Rz=0.003. Conclusion Procalcitonin and lactate levels have no relationship with PELOD score.
