Background: Cholesterol is a fat-like substance in the cell membrane and is a precursor
of bile acid and steroid hormones. Changes in membrane lipid metabolism are other
aspects of lipid biology that are suggested to be involved in the pathophysiology of
schizophrenia. Anti-psychotic drugs affect cholesterol levels in the body,.
Objective: To determine the difference in total cholesterol levels in men with
schozophrenia who get risperidone and haloperidol.
Method:. This study is an experimental, unpaired numerical comparative analytic study
to assess differences in total cholesterol levels in men with schizophrenia who received
risperidone and haloperidol treatment for 8 weeks
Results: There was a very significant difference in total cholesterol levels in men with
schizophrenia between the group receiving risperidone and the group receiving
haloperidol at week 8. p <0.001
Conclusion: There was a significant increase in total cholesterol levels in people with
schizophrenia who received risperidone treatment compared with haloperidol.
