Introduction: Rhinosinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinus mucosa,
accompanied or triggered by rhinitis. Rhinosinusitis frequently found and probably will
continue to increase in prevalence. The cause of rhinosinusitis in part by aerobic
bacteria infection. Rhinosinusitis therapy success is by knowing the culture of aerobic
bacteria and sensitivity testing so that it will provide clues selection of appropriate
antibiotic treatment.
Objectives: To know the description of the pattern of aerobic bacteria and culture
sensitivity test in patients with chronic maxillary rhinosinusitis following surgery in the
Department of Otolaryngology-Head Neck Surgery Faculty of Medicine, University of
North Sumatera / H. Adam Malik, Hospital Medan.
Methods: This study is descriptive in case series design. With 47 research subjects with
chronic maxillary rhinosinusitis who underwent surgery from July 2009 until March
2010.
Results: Patients with chronic maxillary rhinosinusitis in most women (60%), age
group 15-24 years (34%), the chief complaint nasal congestion (43%), surgery BSEF
(70%), aerobic bacteria Streptococcus viridan (36.2 %), sensitive antibiotics Amikacin
(19 specimens).
