    Abstract
The incidence of nosocomial infections in Indonesia is high. Most common is surgical wound infections, aggravated by increasing resistance of bacteria due lo excessive use of antibiotics. This study aims to find the patterns of bacteria and sensitivity test in the Ob/Gyn Surgery Room at Haji Adam Malik Hospital. The results car be used as the basis of bacterial sensitivity to several antibiotics used as prophylactic preoperative, and which type should be given. With descriptive observational study, sample is bacterial contaminants in the air drawn from the Ob/Gyn Surgery Room before surgery for 2 weeks (10 working days), with "settled down plate'' technique using Blood Agar medium. Samples of bacteria from wound swabs of patients who undergo surgery also taken. Cultured bacteria was stained with Gram staining and sensitivity test was performed with several types of antibiotics. These are carried out in the Laboratory of Microbiology Faculty of Medicine, University of Sumatera Utara, Medan. The results showed bacterial contamination, most are Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Bacillus subtilis. The average growth of these bacteria are 12 colony forming units (cfu)/plate (24 hours) and 19 cfu/ plate (48 hours). Sensitivity test shows that antibiotics that are often used are still sensitive, except Cefazoline. From the I 1 surgical wound swab patients, only 2 show the growth of bacteria. The conclusion of this study is bacterial contamination in the operating room air is found so that the antibiotics that have been used before and after surgery is still needed.
