Terjemahan Metafora Peribahasa Nias dalam Bahasa Indonesia

Abstract

Metaphor is the use of a word or group of words with figurative language (not the real sense).Metaphor translating is not easy to do. Therefore, if the metaphor is literally translated it will case misunderstanding. This research aims to know the procedures applied in translating Nias proverb metaphor into Bahasa Indonesia and the acceptability of translation. Descriptive qualitative is applied in this research. The data source is Buku Kumpulan Peribahasa Nias and its translation in Bahasa Indonesia and a rater as assessor towards the acceptability degree of translation. The data are 50 texts of Nias proverb metaphor and its translation in Indonesian. Data are collected through a documentation study and in-depth interview with the rater to assess the acceptability degree of translation. Newmark's (1988;1981). The results show that the translation procedures applied are: 1) The Second Procedure (replace the image in SL with a standard TL image) 15 data or 30%; 2) The Fifth Procedure (conversion of metaphor to sense) 13 data or 26%; 3) The Seventh Procedure (same metaphor combined with sense) 9 data or 18%; 4) The First Procedure (reproducing the same image in the TL) 6 data or 12%; 5) The Third Procedures (translation of metaphor by simile) 5 data or 10% and 6) Reduction Procedure 2 data or 4%. Meanwhile, 18 data (36%) are acceptable and 32 data (64%) less acceptable. The conclusion of this research shows that the translation of metaphor is difficult. It is proved from the translation percentage of less acceptable level is higher than the acceptable.
