The use of antibiotics can cause pathogenic microbes resistance. Natural sources of antimicrobial substances can come from plants that can be used as an alternative to antibiotics, one of the spice plants that has been used is tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.). This study aimed to determine antimicrobial activity of seed coat tamarind extract against several clinically pathogenic microbes i.e. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida sp. Extract of tamarind seed coat was obtained using maceration method of three solvents i.e. ethanol, ethyl acetate and n-hexane with extract concentrations of 15, 25, 35, and 45%. Antimicrobial activity assay showed that tamarind seed coat ethanol extract might inhibit E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus and Candida sp. growth with inhibition zone of 8.66, 17.16, 17.00 and 11.16 mm, respectively. Tamarind seed coat ethyl acetate extract showed to inhibit the microbial growth with inhibition zone of 7.56, 13.66, 10.50, and 10.06 mm, respectively, while tamarind seed coat n-hexane extract exhibited to inhibit the microbial growth with inhibition zone of 9.33, 14.71, 13.33 and 11.83 mm, respectively. Tamarind seed coat at a concentration of 45% of all solvents showed to have more effect in inhibiting the microbial growth.
