    Abstract
Brotowali (Tinospora crispa (L.) Miers) is a medicinal plant using to cure diseases such as rheumatism, bruising, fever, appetite stimulation, jaundice, intestinal worms, and cough of traditionally. The purpose of this study was to analyze antimicrobial activity of brotowali stem extract against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida sp. Brotowali stem were extracted using ethanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane as solvents. A completely randomized design (CRD) was used in this study. Extract concentrations of 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% were used to test the antimicrobial activity. It showed that the extract contained active compounds such as alkaloids, steroids and triterpenoids, saponins, tannins and glycosides in this study. Alcohol extract of brotowali stem showed to inhibit E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and Candida sp. growth with inhibition zone of 16.33, 15.33, 17.67, and 14.00 mm, respectively. Ethyl acetate extract of brotowali stems was showed to inhibit the growth with inhibition zone of 12.67, 13.33, 11.33, 10.00 mm, while n-hexane extract of brotowali demonstrated to inhibit the growth with inhibition zone of14.33, 13.00, 12.33, and 11.00. Of the extract concentrations, 40% of extract of all solvents showed to have more effect in inhibiting the microbial growth.
