dc.description.abstract | lntroduction : Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a squamous cell
carcinoma derived from nasopharyngeal epithelial cells- Nasopharyngeal
carcinoma is one of the most dominant type of cancer in southern China
and Southeast Asia. More than 50,000 new cases reported each year
NPC in this area. The prevalence of NPC in lndonesia was 3.9 each
100,000 population each year. Cyclooxygenase (COX) is an enzyme in
the biosynthetic pathway of prostaglandin (PG), thromboxane and
prostacyclin from arachidonic acid. There are two forms of COX, namely
COX-1 and COX-2. Cellular expression of COX-2 increased above
normal in the early stages of carcinogenesis, and for the development
and growth of invasive tumors. COX-2 overexpressed in some tumors
and in its development proved to be the cause of carcinogenesis.
Purpose: To determine the expression of COX-2 in patients with NPC in
H. Adam Malik hospital.
Method : This research is a descriptive. The research was conducted in
H. Adam Malik hospital. Research was conducted from the month April
2011 to January 2012 with a sample of 30 patients with NPC.
Result : NPC was found higher in age of 41-60 year old (60,0%), male
(73,3%), and non keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma type (53,3%).
With Chi-square test, there was no significant association expression of
COX-2 with histopathological types of NPC (p=0,779), the size of the
primary tumor with COX-2 expression 1p=9,129;, lymph node metastases
size and COX-2 expression p=0,719), and clinical stage with COX-2
expression (p=0,783). | en_US |
