    Abstract
Introduction It is estimated that 70-85% of the population has back pain at some time in life. The etiology of low back pain is so often unknown (non specific) that the effort to find the cause and to seek appropriate treatment leads to a high healthcare expenditure. Low back pain can cause disabilities and non material loss such as decreased quality of life, psychological stress and loss of job. Aims The aim of this study is to find the relation between formal education and perception on low back pain in Haji Adam Malik General Hospital population, Methods Questionairres comprised of six statements pertaining to common misconception about low back pain in the communities were distributed to visitors, hospital staff and students that fulfill the inclusion criteria in Haji Adam Malik General Hospital in May 2013. Results There is a statistically significant relationship between formal education and perception on low back pain (12=13,352; dF2; p<0,05). The percentage of highly educated responders that disagree with the myths about low back pain is consistently higher than those with low level education. Discussion Participants with higher educational attainment tend to have a better perception on low back pain compared to those with lower educational attainment. Education seems to play an important role in the management of low back pain and since the last two decade, psychosocial factors had been studied in regard to the persistence and prognostication of low back pain. Education is a modifiable risk factor that educational intervention should be part of the management of low back pain.
