    Abstract
Malay music is a genre of traditional music that originated and developed in the eastern coast of Sumatra. Initially, Malay music was sung by people from the Malay ethnic group who were inseparable in traditional parties, as well as in religious activities in accordance with Malay cultural identity. Along with the times, Malay music has begun to disappear, is not known to the public and has also undergone changes in the form of presentation and musical style. 'Wak Uteh', a Malay music group originally formed by Djalaut Hutabarat in 2010, consisting of Tok Laut, Syafi'i Panjaitan, Azlina, Darwin Sitinjak, Atoen Soraya, Ika Sima, Rita, Ratna Hasibuan, and Syawal DM in the city of Tanjung Balai which seeks to revive the Malay Coastal music with a more modern claim so that the songs are pleasant to hear and easy to sing, even the songs often adorn wedding parties. Wak Uteh's songs are familiar with Coastal Malay songs that are adapted to the social life of the community in general, and specifically the fishermen in the Tanjung Balai area. What's interesting about the song Wak Uteh also contains lyrics that are full of funny lyrics, but sometimes full of moral messages about life as a way of satisfying longing for the people in Tanjung Balai. This writing aims to analyze the changing style of Malay music by Wak Uteh and also the background of its development. The expected result of this writing is to provide an overview of the Malay Music 'Wak Uteh' as a form of creating modern style Malay music in which the process is adapting traditional Malay songs which are the background for the development of the Wak Uteh music group in Datuk Bandar Timur Village, Tanjung Balai Selatan sub-district, Tanjung Balai city.
