An Analisys of Electra Complex in Eugene O’neill’s Mourning Becomes Electra

Abstract

The title of this thesis is An Analysis of Electra complex in Eugene O‘Neill‘s Mourning Becomes Electra. It is a play written by one of American playwright , Eugene O‘neill which tells about the conflict in the family that influences their daughter‘s psychological development and their daughter becomes suffering Electra complex. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the characteristics and how to overcome Electra complex toward the sufferer. The method of the research used in this thesis is a qualitative descriptive method. By doing this study, it is obtained that the characteristics of Electra complex are deep affection for the parent of the opposite sex, brusque attitude to the parent of the same sex, ultra-sensitive reaction to the emotional or physical rejection of the parent, the fantasying about the sexual relations with the parent.. How to overcome Electra complex is the sufferer isolating herself for the rest of her life. This study is expected to provide deeper insights concerning about Electra complex.

Judul skripsi ini adalah An Analysis of Electra complex in Eugene O‘neilll‘s Mourning Becomes Electra. Drama ini adalah sebuah drama karya salah satu penulis terkemuka di Amerika, Eugene O‘neill, yang bercerita tentang konflik yang terjadi pada sebuah keluarga sehingga perkembangan psikologi putri mereka terganggu dan menjadi menderita Electra complex. Tujuan skripsi ini adalah untuk menelaah karakteristik dan mengatasi Electra complex oleh sipenderita. Metode penelitian yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini adalah metode kualitatif deskriftif. Melalui pengkajian ini, diperoleh karakteristik Electra complex yaitu kasih sayang yang terlalu dalam terhadap orangtua yang berlainan jenis kelamin, sikap kasar terhadap orangtua yang sejenis kelamin, reaksi sangat sensitif secara emosi dan penolakan fisik oleh orangtua, dan fantasi tentang hubungan seksual dengan orangtua. Cara mengatasi Electra complex yaitu penderita mengasingkan diri seumur hidupnya. Kajian ini diharapkan memberikan wawasan yang lebih mendalam mengenai Electra complex.
