dc.description.abstractBackground: Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is a well-known disease in all nations, both developing and developed countries. The incidence is higher in developing country than developed country. As of for now, there is no exact data on the prevalence of CSOM in North Sumatera province, thereby the necessity of epidemiological data is to determine the strategy of prevention and management in accordance to the characteristics of the patients. Objective: To obtain the prevalence data and current profile of patients with CSOM in North Sumatera. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional design conducted in selected areas representing North Sumatera province. Results: 1726 subjects were obtained from 457 households. Total patients with CSOM is 61 out of 1726 subjects, and its prevalence in North Sumatera is 3.5%. Based on the sum, CSOM tubotympanic type is 80,4% and atticoantral type is 19,6%. The age group of patients suffering CSOM is between 10 - less than 20 years (26,23%). Male gender is more likely to suffer CSOM (54, 1%). Most complaints were water discharge from ears (45,9%). Otoscopy examination results found 65.3% central tympanic membrane perforations. Generally, patients in this study have had complaints over 10 years (42. 7%). Conclusion: The prevalence of CSOM in the province of North Sumatera is 3, 5%. According to WHO criteria, the prevalence obtained in this study is high, these results indicate that CSOM is a serious health problem in North Sumatera.en_US
