The family of Chinese communities emphasize filial piety to parents. At the
present time, in nursing homes often encountered parents who are ethnic Chinese.
Most of the Chinese people choose to leave their elderly parents in nursing homes.
The purpose of this study was to describe the value of the family in the Chinese
community and the reasons why family entrust the elderly in nursing home. This
study describes the kinship system of Chinese society, the role of the family to
parents, and the parents’ position in the Chinese community. This research is a
descriptive study using qualitative research methods. Data collected by
observation, interview, and literature study techniques. Interpretation of data
explained the closeness of the family relationship of parents who live in nursing
homes, family background underlying entrust parent in a nursing home, and the
family's perception of the nursing home itself. The Chinese community embraced
patrilineal system and the important role of parents in the family. Families entrust
parents due to economic factors and special handling needs of the parents who
suffer stroke.
