dc.description.abstractThis research explores the growth of modern popular music in Simalungun society, especially related to the structure of music, the meaning of poetry and social functioning. The development of musical works is so rapid and popular in Simalungun society until now. The author focuses the work of Damma Silalahi as a case study. In addition, this thesis also focuses on the biography of Damma Silalahi as an artist who contributed positively to the development of musical art in Simalungun. To address this, qualitative methods are used by utilizing music analysis theories, including theories of William P. Malm by analyzing melodic formulas, song forms, contours, for verse using semiotic theory of meaning and theory about social functioning. Researchers took 10 works of Damma Silalahi songs that represented the genre of music that became the reference material for researchers to see the structure, text and the meaning of the verse. The purpose of the study is to get to know the figure of Damma Silalahi better, animate the structure of music and analyze the meaning of verse and social function of Damma Silalahi’s work. This study found that the structure of music by Damma Silalahi predominantly uses a major diatonic scale that has a harmony arrangement, in some of the initial notes of the song founds mi=3=E tones (tends to minor) and a relatively high range of tones according to the sound characteristics of its creator. The theme of the song consist of themes of love, gratitude, regret, entertainment and children’s respect for parents. In the delivery of the song’s message, connotative, denotative, semiotic meanings are often encountered for the use of verses and texts by Damma Silalahi. In addition, the work he created was contrary to the cultural culture in Simalungun society both in vocal techniques, the use of verse and music genres, which later it has to do with the social functioning that will be put forward in this scientific worken_US
