dc.description.abstract | Ulos Batak weaving industry developments in Traditional Markets
District of Tarutung have been many ups and downs in terms of cultural,
economic and social. The aim of this study examines what factors are causing the
weaving industry Ulos evolving and what factors led to the weaving industry is
fading. The textile industry, known as Ulos not only used as clothing. Ulos a
symbol of status, serves as a precious inheritance or gift during the life cycle of
Batak tribe. Ulos used in Batak tribe lives from birth, marriage and death.
Traditionally weaving is women's work. Women considered to be inspired fabric
with symbolic values related to women's role in caring for the family, children and
society. Therefore, the weaving can be done as long as women get some free time.
Changes that occur have an impact in various aspects. Material prices were
erratic, the emergence of the loom machine and not a machine, woven fabrics
from different regions make the weavers had to move to the songket. Weaver
finally focus weave songket weaving Ulos compared with itself. Modifications to
Ulos also raises the pros and cons. On one side of the modification can destroy the
values contained in a Ulos. On the other hand modification can maintain Ulos
