    Abstract
Background : Overweight or obesity is a worldwide problem in children to adolescents or even adults. Overweight and obesity are defined based on age and gender-specific values in the Body Mass Index (BMI). Waist for Height Ratio (WHtR) can be useful for determining the diagnosis of obesity as a single reference for any gender, age, and race. Destination : The purpose of this study was to determine which is more sensitive and specific between body mass index than the ratio of waist circumference to height in determining overweight and obesity status in junior high school students. Method : Cross Sectional study assessing BMI and the ratio of waist circumference to height in 175 school adolescents (aged 12-16 years) in Assyafiiyah in Medan City and Klumpang PAB Junior High School in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra. Research result : Cut off overweight male BMI 23.23; WHtR 0.485 : female BMI 23.08; 0.495 has sensitivity and specificity male :BMI VS WHtR 69,6%;78,3%; 72,1%;69,8%, P=0,802 and female: BMI VS WHtR 80,4%;65,2% ; 72,1%;70,5 %, P=0,603 respectively. Cut off obesity male BMI 24.95; WHtR 0.535; female BMI 26.35; 0.525 has sensitivity and specificity male : BMI VS WHtR 100%;86,1% ; 99,3%;97,1%, P=0,052 and Female: BMI VS WHtR 77,8%;100%;100%;92,8%, P=0,403 respectively. Conclusion : WHtR was only more sensitive in overweight boys and obese girls. WHtR in all groups was not more specific than BMI. Only the values of sensitivity and specificity in obese men were significantly different.
