Labuhan Deli Village is initially founded due to the influence of the function of Deli River as the main access as well as river transportation networks. Labuhan Deli Village which used to be the center of government grew as a port town, trade center, and the base of Dutch colonial administration and it is believed that this village was very crowded in the 1860s. The purpose of this study was to identify the growth of spatial structure of Labuhan Deli Village viewed from its land use and road network as well as to find out its morphology.
The data used in this qualitative study was based on the empirical growth of research site obtained through literature review, field observation and interviews. The data obtained were analyzed through schematic analysis method explaining the chronology of spatial development structure viewed from the visibility of land use, road networks and residential areas supporting by the theory, map data, visual and verbal data used to find out the morphology of Labuhan Deli Village.
The morphology form of Labuhan Deli Village is related and influential to the development system of land use, road network and residential area. In the first phase, the spatial structure of research location came up as an existence of space due to the influence of actual condition of the surrounding natural environment that it indicated that the spatial structure of the research location was formed by the influence of natural condition. In the second phase, the growth of the spatial structure of research location came up as an existence of space due to the influence of the colonial authority that it indicated that the spatial structure of the research location was formed more by the planning made by an authority. In the third phase, the growth of the spatial structure of research location came up as an existence of space due to the activity system developing in its land use that it is indicated that the spatial structure of the research location formed was more influenced by the development of responsive and flexible land use due to the absence of authority’s regulation.
The interaction of the process of research location growth leads to the development of morphology which grew as an organic morphology, a planned morphology or an imposed morphology.
