Impregnasi Kayu Kelapa Sawit Mempergunakan Polietilena Termodifikasi dengan Anhidrida Maleat

Abstract

Due to the increasing of wood requirement in Indonesia and unsufficient wood supply, the Oil Palm Trunk ( OPT ) may be used as alternative wood in carpentry. Reactive Impregnation is a technique in this research to modify OPT using maleic anhydride and poliethylene resin and benzoil peroxide as initiator. Impregnation is held at the melting point of resin ( 140 °C ) and pressure ( P ) 0, 1, 2 kg/cm2 for 30, 45, 60 minutes in a pressurized reactor. . The results indicates that optimum impregnation condition is in the pressure ( P ) 1 kg/cm2 and duration time is 30 minutes. This is showed by the increasing of Modulus of Elasticity ( MoE ) and Modulus of Rupture ( MoR) from ( 13062,8 and 145,88 ) kg/cm2 to ( 24826,1 and 240,24) kg/cm2 and density increase from 0,38 gr/cm3 to 0,63 gr/cm3. Based on Fourier Tranform Infra Red ( FTIR ), Scanning Electron Microscopy ( SEM ) and X-ray analysis, it is indicated that the resin has been absorbed into the middle part of OPT specimen. FTIR spectra of the wood powder also showed various shifts of absorption peaks, which indicated phys/ca/ interaction between the OPT and resin molecules.
