dc.description.abstract | Implicature is the study about how to understand the speaker‟s meaning which is stated
indirectly. This study deals with conversational implicature in the first American
Presidential Candidares‟ Debate. The objectives of the study are to analyze the types of
implicature used in the debate and to explain the ways of performing implicature used by
the host and the candidates. The qualitative research was used in this research. Grice‟s
conversational implicature (1995) was applied in analysing the data. The results showed
that there were two types of conversational implicature used by the host and the candidates,
namely: generalized conversational implicature and particularized conversational
implicature. there were generalized conversational implicature (71.79%) and particularized
conversational implicature (28.25%). In research finding, all utterances tend to have only
one type of implicature which is identified as generalized conversational implicature. In the
types of generalized conversational implicature context does not have important rule
toward the listener and it is used when the information that is being conveyed is clear, brief
and not ambiguous. Then, the conversational implicatures were used by applying violation
quality maxim 10 (35.42%), violation quantity maxim 18 (37.5%), violation manner maxim
17 (20.8%), and violation relevance maxim (6.25%).Through the implicatures the
candidates tried to create a humour, tell the information, refuse something, make a joke,
clarify, identify, guess, keep secret, ask evidence, hide something and critic. However, the
violat ion of quantity maxim dominantly appeared because the way they defend their
arguments and tell the information is not as informative as it is required. | en_US |
empat proses munculnya implikatur yaitu: penyimpangan maksim kualitas (35.42%),
penyimpangan kuantitas maksim (37.5%), penyimpangan maksim cara (20.8%), dan
penyimpangan relasi maksim (6.25%). Melalui implikatur para kandidat mencoba untuk
menciptakan humor, menolak sesuatu, membuat lelucon, klarifikasi, identifikasi, menebak,
| en_US |
