The Conversational Implicature of Joko Widodo's Interview

Abstract

The aims of this study are to find out the types of implicature,and to explain the ways of performing implicature in JokoWidodo’s interview. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data are utterances in JokoWidodo’s interview. His interviews with Jonathan Tepperman, and Christiane Amanpour. The data are analyzed by using Grice’s theory of conversational implicature (1989). The results of this study shows that (1) The types of conversational implicature, namely particularized conversational implicature mostly used in the Joko Widodo’s utterances with Jonanthan Tepperman. There are 20(69% ) particularized conversational implicature, and there are 9 (31%) generalized conversational implicature from Joko Widodo’s uiterance.The types of conversational implicature namely generalized conversational implicature mostly used in the Joko Widodo’s utterances with Christiane Amanpour. There are 24(52.2 % ) generalized conversational implicature and there are 22(47.8 %) of particularized conversational implicature from Joko Widodo’s utterance.(2) The process of producing conversational implicatures shows Joko Widodo flouts quantity, quality, relation and manner maxim. In the interview with Jonanthan Tepperman, there are 8(40%)of flouting quantity maxim, 4 (20%)flouting quality maxim, 5 (25%)flouting relevance maxim, and 3(15%) flouting manner maxim. In the interview with Christiane Amanpour, thereare 15(68.2%) of flouting quantity maxim, 1 (4.4%)flouting quality maxim, 3(13.7%) flouting relevance maxim, and 3 (13.7%)flouting manner maxim.
