There are many problems often found in the fish farming field which can reduce
the productivity. One of those problems is caused by ectoparasite's infestation.
Identification and prevalence study on the ectoparasites of lele dumbo (Clarias
gariepinus) was conducted in Balai Karantina Ikan, Pengendalian Mutu dan
Keamanan Hasil Perikanan Kelas I, Medan I Araskabu, from July to September,
2014. A total of 10 lele dumbos (Clarias gariepinus) were collected once
randomly from a fish farming site located in Tanjung Rejo, Percut Sei Tuan. Gills,
body mucus, fins mucus and eyes mucus were collected by scrapping method and
observed by using 400X magnification microscope. This study revealed that of
the total number examined, 6 fishes were infected with ectoparasites, which
included Dactylogyrus sp. and Gyrodactylus sp.. Dactylogyrus sp. were found in
gills with 20% of prevalence and Gyrodactylus sp. were found in body mucus
with 50% of prevalence. There were no ectoparasites found in fins mucus and
eyes mucus.
