The study of edge effect of resident plantation on the structure and composition of
vegetation in the forest of Mount Sibuatan Karo district, North Sumatra has been
conducted. Research site was determine using purposive sampling method with
the area measuring of 60x200 meter, subdivided into 10 observation areas.
Vegetation analysis was carried out by applying a square method or plots with
certain sizes which were categorized into tree (20x20 meter) pole (10x10 meter),
sapling (5x5 meter), seedling (2x2 meter), and ground cover (1x1 meter). The
result of this study were consisting of 38 species of tree, 56 species of pole, 44
species of sapling , 24 species of seedling, and 19 species of ground cover. The
dynamics of vegetation showed that edge effect influenced as far as 140 meter
from the edge. Vegetation of tree, pole, sapling and seedling was dominated by
Fagaceae while ground cover was dominated by Selaginellaceae.
