Uncontroled bioaerosol in a hospital environment can be the source of nosocomial
infection. An alternative way to overcome the transmission of this infection is
needed. This study aimed to determine the potention of phyllosphere bacteria
from ornamental plants Ficus elastica, Philodendron bipinnatifidum and
Aglonema simplex in controlling the growth of potentially pathogenic bioaerosol
microorganism. Bioaerosol bacteria isolated from ambient air of RSU dr.
Pirngadi, Medan using MSA, MC, PCA and SDA plate exposed to the air for 15
minutes. The most dominant isolated bioaerosol bacteria were Staphylococcus
aureus, Staphylococcus sp., Bacillus sp., Streptococcus sp., Pseudomonas sp.,
Salmonella sp., Shigella sp., and fungi of the genus Aspergillus, Alternaria,
Trichoderma, Neurospora, Fusarium and Penicillium. Inhibitory activity test
results indicated that phyllosphere bacteria of A. simplex had the highest
inhibitory effect to the growth of bioaerosol fungal. The most potential isolate was
AS2 with inhibition zone against Mucor sp. was 4.2 cm. Phyllospheric bacterial
inhibition of P. bipinnatifidium isolate PB2 was 3.7 cm against Mucor sp.,while
the highest inhibition of phyllospheric bacteria of F. elastica showed by isolate
FE2 was 2.4 cm against Mucor sp. The identification result of three phyllosphere
bacteria belong to Pseudomonas spp. This study concluded that phyllospheric
bacteria from ornamental plant had better inhibition for against bioaerosol fungal
rather than bioaerosol bacterial.
