    Abstract
Background: Syphilis is chronic sexually transmited infection caused by Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum). The chronic infections of syphilis related with immune response of patients with syphilis. Several studies have shown that T cells are important in the immune response to T. pallidum. Large numbers of T cells, both helper (CD4) and suppressor (CD8) infiltrate syphilitic lesions. Objective: To asses the correlation between the numbers of CD4 and CD8 T lymphocyte cells and early syphilis stages. Methods : This is a cross sectional analytic study on 27 patients with early syphilis stages (9 primary syphilis, 9 secondary syphilis and 9 early latent syphilis) in outpatient clinic of Sexually Transmitted Infections, Dermatology and Venereology Departement Haji Adam Malik Hospital and Veteran Sexually Transmitted Infections Ctinic. Diagnosis of early syphilis stages established based on arnlnnesis, physical examination and serologic tests VDRUTPHA. CD4 and CD8 T lymphocyte cells count were measured with Fluorescence-activated cell sorter (FACS). Result : A weak negative correlation was found between the numbers of CD4 and early syphilis stages (r: -0,376, p: 0,053). A very weak positive correlation was found between the numbers of CD8 and early syphilis stages (r:0,113, P: 0,575). Conclusion: A significant correlation was not found between the numbers of CD4 and CD8 T lymphocyte cells and early syphilis stages
