The potency of bacteria isolated from Sibolga and Tanjung Balai seashore in
degrading diesel oil has been studied in the Microbiology Laboratory Departemen of
Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences University of Sumatera Utara
from May to December 2010. Three isolates were used: TJB 01, TJB 05 and SBG 05 .
The ability of bacterial isolates in degrading diesel oil was determined based on the
growth and decrease the concentration of the composition of diesel oil such as toluene,
undecane, ethylbenzene and nonane. The observation of bacterial growth was done by
SPC methods on day 0, 4, 8 and 12. The reduced concentration was analyzed using
GC, performed on days 0, 4, 8 and 12. Among 3 isolates of bacteria showed that SBG
05 showed the better growth at day 4 (323x10 12CFU/ml), at day 8 (701x1012CFU/ml)
and at day 12 (278x1012CFU/ml). The growth of bacterial isolates is line with their
ability to degrade diesel oil. Isolat SBG 05 representing most isolat have potency to in
diesel oil degrade, posed at from its ability degrade diesel oil component which
consist of ethylbenzene 80,23 ppm (70,46%) at day 4 and 76,4 ppm (67,10%) at day
12. Isolat TJB 01 can degrade nonane equal to 85,66 ppm ( 65,54%) at day 4. Then,
result shows that the growth of bacterial isolates is line with their abitity to degrade
diesel oil.
