The research to observe growth responses of three varieties of chili peppers
(Capsicum frutescens L.) to salinity treatment was conducted at The Plant
Physiology Laboratory of Faculty Mathematics and Science, University of
Sumatera Utara, Medan. Experiment was arranged in a Complete Randomized
Factorial Design of six treatments of salinity (0, 2000, 4000, 6000, 8000, and
10000 ppm of NaCl) and three variety of chili peppers (Local, Genie and
Bhaskara). The result showed that interaction between salinity and varieties of
chili peppers affect diameter of stem, diameter of root, leaf thickness, density of
adaxial and abaxial stomata, and content of chlorophyl a significantly, but does
not affect plant height, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, root-shoot ratio, content
of chlorophyl b, and content of total chlorophyl significantly. All of variety show
responses to decrease plant height, diameter of stem, diameter of root, shoot dry
weight, root dry weight, root-shoot ratio, density of adaxial and abaxial stomata
but leaf thickness increase as well as increasing of NaCl until 10000 ppm. Genie
is the variety with the lowest decrease plant height, diameter of stem, shoot dry
weight, root dry weight, and density of adaxial stomata compared with Local and
Bhaskara for every increase of salinity.
