In vitro antimicrobial activity of ethanol leaves and flower extract of tahi
ayam (Tagetes erecta Linn.) against growth of Streptococcus mutans, Shigella
dysenteriae and Candida albicans has done. The purpose is to study the
component secondary metabolites of the extracts and to investigate the ability of
the plant extract against the growth of S. mutans, S. dysenteriae and C. albicans.
Both leaves and flower extract used were 0, 5, 10, 20 and 40%. The extract was
made by maseration method and the activity antimicrobial was conducted by disc
diffusion. The result showed that secondary metabolites of tahi ayam leaves are
alkaloid, steroid and terpenoid while the flowers are alkaloid, flavonoid, steroid,
terpenoid and saponin. Ethanol leaves and flower extract has a difference in
inhibiting S. mutans, S. dysenteriae and C. albicans. In 5% ethanol extract of
leaves and flower inhibits the growth of S. mutans, S. dysenteriae and C. albicans.
Minimum inhibition concentration ethanol leaves and flower extract against S.
mutans, S. dysenteriae and C. albicans are 1%.
